It is one thing to understand, that what has become the United States of America rode on the backs of these brave men who were starving, barely clothed and stretched beyond the capacity of the human body and mind and the women who supported them. It is vastly another to be taken inside the war with such detail, to seemingly live and breathe with those who fought it, to understand in such intimate detail and depth their thoughts and fears, and to be so engrossed in a book as to live through it with them!

You will laugh, cry, be happy and sad as you come to know the characters and their inconceivable conviction to persevere. You come to love old Moses and you miss him as the story moves on. You're deeply touched when Deborah Hewes, a somewhat war-hardened middle aged woman trades her bold front for tenderness and 'mothers' an 18 year old soldier.

This book has moved me and taught me more than any history book I've ever read. You will never know what really went into the making of this country until you read it..and then you will never forget it.

Another Forstchen book which is not a bad read, but this book was not written by Newt Gingrich. It is no coincidence that Forstchen's name is on all his books. Man of the reviewers are the same as on Amazon for his books and most of their reviews are only for his books or conservative books. It is really strange that Newt Gingrich associates himself with all these military titles since in the 1960s he was a draft dodger who could not take 2 years out of his valuable time to serve his country - sound familiar? He is another paper patriot. This type of book is not fair to real authors who do not have political name recognition to sell their books. Without Newt's name on the book this and other titles would never sell. Save your money, B&N has many good titles worthy if the price and not a fictionalized distortion of history.

This book and the one before it "To Try Men's Souls" were both very good and very well written. I don't know much about the Revolutionary War and both books taught me a great deal. I actually found these books to be much better than the Civil War series written by Newt Gingrich and Willliam Forstchen.

    High praise for Valley Forge

Valley Forge is a good read on its own, but w/its companion work To Try Men's Souls is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of our great nation.
Yes it is an historical novel as opposed to a non-fictional work, but after completing Valley Forge I found myself enjoying it as much as Gore Vidal's Lincoln or Mc Cullough's 1776.
