Really Worth Reading!
This is such an interesting book and so well written! This book is a compilation by author Yossi Katz of stories of Jewish heroism which are related to the reader with both pride and poignancy. A skilled storyteller, Katz will keep any reader captivated and pull on the heartstrings of Jew and non Jew alike. Well-known heroes such as Menachim Begin, Hannah Senesh and Barney Ross the boxer are included in this book. But it is the actions of the ordinary heroes who helped create and sustain the small country of Israel throughout its development and its battles for survival that really enhance this amazing collection of stories. Was this review helpful? The men and women that Katz writes about, some were born in Israel and others born in America or in Europe, but all have one thing in common, a devotion to the state of Israel and a pride in being Jewish. Here is an example of one of Katz's heroes...David Marcus, an All-American athlete and Rhodes scholar who left West Point when WWII broke out and renlisted in the army. He fought in Europe and actually was present at the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. Haunted by what he saw he became committed to helping establish a Jewish homeland in Israel. His remarkable life story is told by Katz. Marcus' story is only one of many incredible stories that will give you a greater faith in the goodness of human beings and in the belief that under duress people can behave in extraordinary ways.
What is most impressive about this book is that author Yossi Katz is able to relate everything that is key to a person's life and his/her spirit in just a few pages and he does this in such a moving way that the reader just wants to keep reading about more heroes. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I plan to share it with friends and family who i know will also enjoy it. I encourage others to get this book and read it, you wont' regret it!

I had the priveledge of hearing some of these stories at Alexander Muss, as did my sons. We have told Yossi for years to write the stories that he has been using in teaching, and finally he has. Many of these short biographies are of people who are are less known, and deserve to be told. A wonderful variety of people from athletes to soldiers, and rulers to students, both men and women.
This is a great book for classrooms, or to give to your favorite child as a gift. You will not be disapointed or bored.
Yossi writes the way that he teaches, capturing the attention of the listener (reader) and teaching when they least expect it.
I highly recommened this book, as do my kids!
