A degenerate element of today's society
It was when...Read More
It was when I encountered debasing comments about homosexuals that I began to question the morality of such a read. Phrases such as, "In Germania, men who lusted for men were drowned in a bog, their perversity thus hidden from the world forever. Ah, but in Rome they spoke openly about their foul passion" (182), or "Rome, reputedly pure and majestic, was a stinking bog of base humanity drowning in the filth of depravity" (182).
This book is NOT a Christian book. It by no means spreads the word of God's love for ALL people; it criticizes and blames, and is rife with innuendo hidden behind a facade of "good Christian piety."
In my opinion, these ideals that there is only one kind of love between man and woman are completely retrograde to Jesus' word, and I believe that Ms. Rivers, while entitled to her own opinion, is merely hurling our society back to the lifestyle like that of Rome presented in her novel; decadence, discrimination, and bestial ideology. Jesus would not have believed homosexuals to be the "stinking bog of base humanity" and I think A Voice in the Wind is the farthest thing from a Christian read.Show Less

So, I won't really go into the story line, I'll just say that this book is worth reading. The ending is touching... you should probably have the 2nd book available so you're not left stranded. That is... if you enjoy this book. "A Voice in the Wind" is my favorite of the trilogy. I wish I was a woman like Hadassah!

Voice in the Wind
While this is a romance, it is written in such a way that you can understand better what it must have been like to follow Jesus just years after He left the earth if you never actually met Him. It is the first in a series of 3. I have given the series as gifts to many people with positive feedback always. It starts out a little "manly" (bloody) but that is very important to the whole story. It is excellent.

I wish all Christian Fiction was this good...
I could not put this book down. I can't remember when a character in a book grabbed me the way Haddasah's character did. As a Christian I came away with a new desire to have a servant's heart. Most Christian fiction I have read in the past lacked literary merit and was mostly fluff. However, Rivers weaves an intense story line with life like characters. I just finished An Echo in the Darkness as well and it was fabulous, too.

I'm so happy this is finally available for my nook! This is hands-down one of my favorite novels of all time. Francine Rivers brings ancient Rome and all of its culture and customs to life through the story of Hadassah, a young Jewish girl sold into slavery after the destruction of her beloved Jerusalem and the deaths of her entire family. Through her harrowing journey from Jerusalem to Rome, and even into her new life as a slave to a prosperous Roman family, Hadassah never loses her faith in God, and her actions have tremendous consequences - both good and bad. This novel has everything from suspense and action to drama and romance - all while reflecting the grace and the redeeming love of God. When you are finished, you will wish you had the faith of Hadassah and you'll be ready to start the second book in the series - An Echo in the Darkness.

All time FAVORITE BOOK!
I picked up this book, because someone recommended it to me. At first I thought, it would be kind of predictable... NOT TRUE. This book (along with Echo in the Darkness and As Sure as Dawn) kept me on a roller coaster ride of my emotions. I couldn't put the book down. You'll fall in love with the some characters, and despise others. But no matter what...you'll definitely become wrapped up in the story. I felt (oddly) connected to these characters. I love Francine Rivers way of writing from multiple different characters perspectives. She has a way of really making you feel like your involved in the story. The book is not only filled with a deep love story and intense action, but the overall theme and messages that Rivers conveys, is life changing. I am grateful to Francine Rivers for showing me what it really means to live a life pursuing God's own heart.
Yes, I was one of the millions who fell in love with the Twilight Saga love story- without a doubt- this series quickly became even better than Twilight to me!
Thanks Francine Rivers for blessing readers with an all around excellent book!1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

Unforgettable! Incredible!
This book along with the others in the series have become my favorite books of all time! I could not put the book down and when I was not reading it, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Francine Rivers does an amazing job writing this book! I felt like I knew the characters and their deepest thoughts and their heart. Francine does such an incredible job describing her characters on the outside and inside, as well as the Roman era. I could go on and on. Just read it! It will inspire you in your walk with the Lord.

Best Christian Book I've Ever Read
A deeply moving story about faith in God and love that waits patiently through time. Definitely a must read for Christians and non-Christians alike.

This story follows Hadassah, a little Christian girl, (who is thought to be a Jew) through slavery after the fall of Jerusalem. She finds her way, with God's help, into the Valerian household. There, she faithfully serves the family, especially Julia, the daugther of Demicus and Phoebe Valerian and falls in love with Marcus Valerian. With every opportunity, she tries to share her stories of God and help those around her see the greatness of God, though she has particular trouble with Julia, the selfish and willful daugther, and Marcus, the son who believes in no one but himself and his own pleasures.
Torn apart from everything she knows, her family, her homeland, can she bring the Valerian family and those around her to see the greatness that is God's love? -

The Mark of the Lion Series novels are three of my top five favo
The Mark of the Lion Series novels are three of my top five favorite reads. Francine Rivers transports you to Rome in this first book of the series, A Voice in the Wind. I originally read the series over 10 years ago and re-read it, loving it every much if not more than the first time. Although the book is slightly over 500 pages, I found myself reading this book at a very fast pace and enjoying every word. The characters are painted so vividly that you are immersed into the times and troubles of this time in history. I am generally not a fan of Christian fiction because it always seems to be so unrealistic but Francine Rivers does a remarkable job and I find myself thrilled to be a reader at every turn of the page.

Although it took me a while to get into this story, it was so worth it. Francine Rivers does a beautiful job building the characters and describing the setting. Wonderful, touching story.
