I typically avoid romance novels due to the pitfalls they are so well known for. But the premise of this book intrigued me, so I gave it a try. It is not a bad book, but neither is it as good as some of the other reviews would have you believe. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Stereotypically, the heroine is quite feisty and her hero is devilishly handsome and experienced in the ways of the world. A competition ensues between the two, and they smolder dark looks and heated embraces.
Sigh. The plot was wonderfully fresh at some points, and then would dive into romance mediocrity again.
Perhaps I am alone in this, but I feel the back-story between the two leads was more interesting than the plot itself. The reader gets only a taste of it in the first few pages, and then the story jumps a decade. Too bad--even a flashback would have solidified the emotions and events that Johnson only provides us through dialogue.
All in all, if you want a few steamy scenes, lots of pining and some intrigue in the 13th century, this is your book.
