Highly Recommended!!!

War and Peace is a classic that should not be missed by anyone. Leo Tolstoy is a master story teller. The formatting of this ebook was masterful as well. Very professional and no errors. Worth every penny.

My apologies to everyone reading this "review" in other editions of the book - B&N doesn't separate reviews by edition. I'm only talking about the free eBook edition translated by Leo Weiner. And I hope that in the future B&N will correctly label it as "War and Peace - Volume III".

    more from this reviewer

Had its moments but can be a struggle

As the title suggests, the book covers two stories of war and peace. In the pacing of the book Tolstoy would mix in his observations of the war from a historical standpoint, and then jump into the narrative of the Russian families. It was frustrating, and hard at times to get into the story because of the abrupt transitions between the two views. I'm sure there were a lot of subtleties that I missed in this story because I'm not Russian, and I didn't live in the 19th Century; however, I did find the book interesting. In the introduction, the translator Richard Pevear stated Tolstoy's goal was to "tell the truth" about what happened, and I think he did a good job of depicting the harsh realities of war and the impact on families across all social classes. This straight-forward thinker finds a way to search through the clutter to critique the cause, and the why, and with it, generate a unique hindsight. For Tolstoy I believe it was more important to find the goodness and cheerfulness amongst the chaos, as if the war didn't exist----life moves on. Overall it is a classic, but make sure you have a good translation otherwise war and peace will be more war to get through, and you might not find a lot of peace.

    Sleepy story zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..............

Although this novel is a classic, I could not finish reading the novel, and my mind lost its concentration. There was only one character that stands out in my mind, Pierre. It was very boring. For those of you who did enjoy it and actually finished reading it, my hats off to you!!

    Buy another edition ...

The two stars relate only to this edition; otherwise, I would give 'War and Peace' a full five. About 150 pages into this version, I realized it was 'abridged.' I stopped. I bought a complete version (Signet Classics; Dunnigan translation). I started over. I soon realized that I had been reading a cadaver of a book; the lifeblood had been drained in the process of reducing the volume. So many rich details had been removed. No wonder I had been confused about certain transitions and references - the connective tissue had been cut away. For about the same price, buy an unabridged version. Otherwise, you'll find yourself reading a thin and pale imitation, not 'War and Peace' in full health.
