When I first heard of this book, I laughed at the concept: The US intervening to help a struggling Soviet Union from Japanese supported Islamic forces in 2020. However, when I saw that this was well recieved by critics and readers, I decided to give it a shot, and I'm very glad I did! The chracters are by far the best developed in any techno-thriller I've read, and while I wish there was a bit more descriptions of the weapons and technology, what is there is amazing, yet beleivable for a near future war. The combat and military tactics show great accuracy, thanks to Mr. Peters' military background, and while melodramatic at times, the dialogue is mostly realistic. The plot is engaging and the ending is surprisingly dark. The only major downside I found was the large number of unnecessary romance subplots.
