Outstanding novel..very disturbing

I just finshed this excellent novel and I am overwhelmed. The writing is outstanding, and I have not been able to stop thinking about these characters. Kevin is a sociopath AND he is evil. Mostly, I am struck by Eva's love for Kevin, which is apparent throughout, but especially at the end of the story. This novel is thought- provoking, disturbing and frightening. I highly recommend this novel to readers who love to figure out the endings (I did, with the help of wonderfully placed clues) of incredibly well written books. Truly the best novel I've read in a long while!

This book was AWFUL. It didn't have to be. It had so much potential with its plot. I liked how the author told the story through Eva's letters to her husband, but her use of language ... my God! I practically needed a dictionary to get through it. People just don't speak that way. It made her book incredibly difficult to navigate and care about. It was also horribly predictable. I knew the ending about 1/8 of the way through. I finished the book because I started it, but it took forever to do so, and I am sorry I even picked it up. I can think of five different authors who could have written this same exact story a million times better. What a shame.

    Hard to read...

This book was not at all what I expected it to be. Typically I can read a book in 2- 3 days and it took me 2 weeks to read this one. Very hard to keep up with...just dragged on and on.

A good story that is overshadowed by the writing. I can't imagine how any reader isn't distracted by the author's over-the-top use of a thesaurus!

I recommend Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

Nineteen Minutes is a much better book and is easier to follow

    Pretentious

This book deals with an enclosed Eastern U.S. society that is so pretentious I couldn't finish it. And there are few books I can't finish.

Honestly, the author could have gotten to the point a hundred pages sooner. She drew it out way to long, was way to wordy. By reading the back of the book, I was sure it would be a compelling read - I was WRONG. Don't read it, I finished it to only find out how sick the kid really was.....

    Not impre Disappointed

I wouldn't say the vocabulary was difficult, but the writing style was annoying and tedious - unbelievable ending, as well - for me, it was too sensationalized a representation of sociopathy that was not consistent with Kevin's personality throughout the rest of the book

As a psychiatric social worker, I thought I would like this one
I really hope the movie is better

    Not for me

This was a very well written book but a very depressing one to me. Wasn't sure what this book was about when a friend suggested it to me.

    Why The $10 Words

I must say that when I started this book I almost changed my mind about finishing it! I truly loved the story line and how she portrayed Eva but the over abuse of the $10 words was excruiating! I truly believe if she would have toned it down this book would have received 5 stars across the board! I'm not sure what age genre she was targeting but my friend who is an avid reader struggled with the verbiage! I must say the surprise at the end threw for a spin that will stay in my head for years to come! Kudos to Shriver for blow-your-mind-need-air-insanely-shocker of an ending!!! The only reason I gave only a 2 star rating is to let readers beware that this book isn't for the simple minded!

    Disturbing...

Even knowing the subject matter ahead of time, I had thought this book would be less disturbing. I found I was not able to empathize with any of the characters nor did I like them. The only redeeming factor of the book was the surprise ending.
