Helping my 2 yr old know what to expect

We are having a baby soon and I got this book to give our 2 1/2 year old an idea of what to expect. He loved it! Asks to read the "baby book" over and over. He tells me that he wants to help give the baby a bath and change diapers, etc so I know he is getting the point. It does stress the attachment parenting aspects that the Sears family is known for, and shows simple, age-appropriate drawings of breastfeeding moms, which I think is helpful for him to see before the baby gets here. It is really aimed at kids a little older than him, but can be simplified to a toddler level if needed. I'm a pediatrician myself and looked quite a bit for one with words and pictures I thought he could relate to and this was perfect.

Read the book often with my 2 y.o. son and he loved it!  He's no

Read the book often with my 2 y.o. son and he loved it!  He's now 3 and we still go back to reading it, and baby is now 6 months.  He seems to have adjusted reasonably well and I think the book truly helped.  He could relate to the family even though we have 3 boys and the book has a girl in the family.  He routinely tries to help out just like the older siblings in the book do.  Very nice, simple and yet sophisticated story/rationale.  I'd definitely recommend it.

    Not good for younger children

This book almost reads like a text book, not at all for younger children. I bought it for my two year old son, thinking it would do a good job explaining what will happen when baby gets home. The book is way too wordy for a young child. I basically look at the pictures with him and make up a story as I go along. I would not recommend this for any child under 6 or 7 years old.

    Outstanding for Older Siblings

If you were an older sibling, too bad you didn't have this book. It's a wonderful help to let little ones know how to relate to the family's new baby.
