    Hilarious!

My daughter read this to me on a road trip, it was perfect for breaking the monotony of the road! We found his book thoroughly entertaining! Whether it was his contolling perfectionist mom, his beloved older sister who was always ready to "throw him under the bus," or his easy going dad, there was always something happening that Eric made tender, sad sometimes, but always from a funny point of view. Some chapters had us laughing out loud "Dear GOD IN HEAVVVVEEEENNN" read it!

    I Also Recommend:

A Revealing Novel of one Gay Boy's Childhood

From the beginning of this memoir, I could relate to the young Eric Poole. Just as he admired Endora of Bewitched and wanted to be her, Samantha was my imaginary friend around the time I was in kindergarten. I also had a sibling with whom I played and fought, and a mother that was a bit neurotic about cleaning. (Though not on his mother's level.)
I really wasn't tormented through school as he was, but I certainly knew what it felt like to be different, and only partially understood why.
Not all gay people had this experience, but many will be able to relate and empathize. I believe anyone will connect to this story of growing up as an "outsider", whether gay yourself, or just someone who loves or knows someone who is.
There is a lot of truth in this book.
Michael Travis Jasper, author of the novel "To Be Chosen"
