Great Characters, Satisfying Ending -- Maiya Harrington

WHAT I LIKED: The characters. They were all so individual and vivid and, in some cases, a bit larger than life. The people and situations sometimes were sort of zany. One person might be calm and reasonable one moment and totally blowing a cork in the next. The mystery plot was well-conceived, I thought, and developed throughout the book consistently and coherently. At the end, just as they should be, all the loose ends were tied up neatly. All the various mysterious, seemingly nonsensical, things that happened from time to time eventually came together in an integrated ending. I'm always impressed when someone can take a lot of details like that and weave them into a pattern that makes sense at the end. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The strong language and the cavalier attitude toward sex. The book, in my opinion, would be fine without it and would be suitable for a wider audience. I realize that gritty realism may be suitable for some books, but I don't think this one needed it

    Nice length

This book was around 270 pages. (Sorry, I can not remember the exact amount. Must be having a senior moment.) I had a really hard time getting interested in this book. It seemed to drag a lot. There was a lot of cursing also. I quit reading it twice and went back to it, bound and determined to finish it. It never really got any better, but it did not get any worse either. I did not like the heroine always harping on pre-post and menopausal women. Yes, at times, it is uncomfortable, but it is not as horrible and debilatating as the author makes it out to be. There are many adult themes in this book. It is chick lit and for adults. Who and whydunit were easy to figure out. There were not many surprizes. This book seemed to never end. Because I have books which were much worse. I am rating this as a three star. If the editing were better, cursing left out and middle aged women, portrayed with a kinder, gentler keyboard, I would have rated it a four. I did like the dog, but the heroine was not the most concentious owner, ofrten forgetting to feed, water and let the poor thing out.

    If you like Janet Evanovich....

Hijinks galore, good character development, and the story flows seamlessly. Lily could be Stephanies cousin! Highly recommend.
