Thoroughly engrossing and completely captivating just the way the best kind of story should be. I felt bereft when it was over. This was my first read by Ivan Doig and I read it in paperback. From the reviews here, I understand that the Nook version has many type-os. This was not the case in paperback. It was immaculate and I am here for MORE, type-os or no! My hat is off to you Ivan.

Reads like poetry, tells like a classic

This was a fantastic book I read in two sittings. I had started it earlier in the year, and gotten bored with it and put it down. I deeply regret doing so, as it was pure poetry to read and actually very gripping in the end. The Whistling Season starts with a family of four men, one father, three sons, applying for a housekeeper. What they get is sweet and caring Rose, and her brother, enccentric and brilliant Morrie. As the housekeeper's world of satin and housework collides with the boy's world of rural Montana, sparks in the form of secrets start to fly. I fell in love, broke my heart, laughed, cried, and came away from this book smiling with the notion that everything can change for the best. What I would give for a sequel.

    I Also Recommend:

    Doig

Wonderful writer. I'm now reading his Sky book. I really looked forward every night to reading what comes next. Very original, wonderful plot, colorful characters, won't give story away. Deserves the five stars.

This book will stay with me.

My first Ivan Doig novel and I was captured from page 1. Such a wonderful insight into the lives of our ancestors living in Montana in the early 1900's. All of the characters seemed so real to me. I will certainly read Mr. Doig's other books.

    A Great Read

Our B&N book club recently read The Whistling Season. I have a little trouble getting started with Ivan Doig's books, but once I get into them, I can't stop reading. The characters in this book were fascinating. Morrie was a fantastic teacher. I wish he had been able to stay. Rose was quite a housekeeper, even though she couldn't cook. What a wonderful childhood the boys had. The one-room schools provided a wonderful learning experience. The book left the fate of the one-room schools up in the air. Will Paul be able to appropriate money for rural schools?

One of the best books I've read

I really enjoyed this book, and its characters were absolutely wonderful. There was a little bit of everything...mystery, charm, and humor. I always enjoy reading stories set in days gone by, a simpler time when people respected eachother and appreciated each day, and this story was very touching.

    Nostalgic

I enjoyed the book immensely. I grew up in a rural community and knew classmates who attended small schools like this. I also understand the struggles to keep the rural and small town schools open today and what these schools mean to the fabric of the community. Mr. Doig has a wonderful way of weaving words together that I enjoy. It makes me smile as I follow the story unfolding.

    melodic

I have never read Ivan Doig, but am now a new fan. The story of 'Whistling Season' is charming, but it is Doig's way with words that had me reading and re-reading passages. Absolutley loved it.
