Cleeves' insightful awareness in depicting the remote Shetland Isles is evident in the 392 pages of resplendence she skillfully traverses. In a nutshell, magnificence personified. Perez's investigative focus is set in the rural hamlet of Biddista, a locale where the denizens are linked - by blood or friendship. Cleeves' sharp discernment of capturing the barrenness of this modern day populace coming to grips with bidding adieu to antiquated ways and greeting the contemporary lifestyle is extraordinary. The compelling plot in White Nights is effectively showcased, the prose is arresting and the fatigued dynamics between Perez and Taylor is astutely navigated. Once again, Cleeves sprinkles White Nights with a cast of multifarious inhabitants that enhances the tale she unfolds with a richness that is not only noteworthy, but amplifies it to a luminous level of epic radiance!

This and the first book, Raven Black, both flow well and are quick reads.

    Stark Scottish Shetland's Suspense Chiller

Who knew that white Midsummer nights would drive folks to murder?
Ann Cleeves has another winner in this under-the-microsope view of a place where time has not changed the loneliness and soltitude of an isolated and rugged spot. An insular community where emotions are held in check to survive and non-islanders are usually avoided.

Jimmy Perez is the Detective Inspector who although not a Native is one of the closest things to it. His manner and methods are suited to the nature of the island and indeed his judgements are entirely accurate.
He affords dignity, respect and acceptance to all he meets and keeps his own counsel.

Ann Cleeves has an uncanny understanding of the psychological twists and turns of folks who are isolated both by geography and nature.
White Nights has risen above the benchmark of the first Shetland Island book which was itself masterful and awarded the Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award

    Highly recommend

I love this new series. Location I never knew is so beautifully described. The mystery is so well done starting with the first chapter. Strong female character and you will fall in love with
Jimmy. This is one that you want to read all night.

    Good book.

I enjoyed reading both of Ann Cleeves books. While they are not action books and are not particularly suspenseful, the characters are likeable and real, the setting is very different and Cleeves does a great job of imprinting the setting into the characters. The conclusion is plausible.
