This book does what it does well, but where is Arviragus? Where are Cartimandua, Calgacus, Allectus and all the sons of Cerdic? Where's Paul the Chain whose ministrations caused Vicarius Flavius Martinus to kill himself? Where are all the dozens of little Celtic saints who swarmed over Britain in the Dark Ages, and the complex genealogies of the Anglo-Saxon kings? Don't characters like Seutonius Paulinus and Theodosius the Younger deserve more than a passing mention? It makes for enjoyable reading, but there should be more to a scholarly work than that. I would recommend it only to those who are just beginning to study the period. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
