I loved this book, and would recommend it in a heartbeat! i think that it is mostly suited for 8th grade [maybe even 9th grade] and higher, because the phrases are hard to understand, and some scenes may not be appropriate. LOVED THIS BOOK, PLEASE READ!! :-)

This was a phenominal book!
This was a phenominal book! If you haven't read it, you should! It is slightly hard to follow at times, but that doesn't mean that it is a bad book, because it is FABULOUS!

Critic From Oz
I finished reading this book a few weeks ago and my only disappointment was the sexual scenes in the book. I am not a big fan of in detail sexual text, the author can make it simple and to the point he does not need to go all in detail about it and drag it on for chapters. Other than that the book was great I enjoyed the Sociology aspect of the book, the different cultures and racism in the book that people face everyday. It is definitely a side people don¿t see when watching the movie, I like this version a lot better....Of course I don¿t really think I liked the movie. I am starting the sequel real soon Son of a Witch. I would recommend this book to anyone that has time to get enchanted by a different world and like politics. The book is very cultural and political it gets you in touch with stuff that really happens. Besides the flying monkey and magic part lol.

Surprising Gem
This book is a treasure. For those of us who grew up enjoying the Wizard of Oz this is a refreshing and intriguing way to view the land of Oz. This adventure has political relavence, romance, action and adventure. If you are looking for a read to tickle your heart as well as mind, look no further! Maguire's writing style is indepth, but still easily navigated. Simply, a joy.

Not for kids
This book seems to be preoccupied with sexual undertones. It gives a little insight into what leads up to the original Wizard of Oz but falls way short of being a solid foundation.
I would not recommend anyone under 18 reading this. I also do not recommend anyone who takes offense to discussion of a variety of sexual topics to read this.1 out of 3 people found this review helpful.

What a read!
I started reading this book after all the hype on it had passed. I also expected it to be more of a child's story. Boy was I wrong! It is by far the most thought provoking book that I have read in the last few months. I simply couldn't put it down! It brings up a lot of very interesting ideas- including the nature of evil. I laughed, thought and cried by the time I finished the book! Bravo to master storyteller, Gregory Maguire!

Great read
This gives a new look to the immortalized "Wicked Witch of the West" in the original series. Good reading material for teens-adults. I don't recommend it for young ones since it has mature content.

lost...
i could not get into this book. it was difficult to imagine the characters, and understand what the author was trying to get across...
i had expected it to be so much better being that it is now a broadway musical, but it was awful... :(1 out of 3 people found this review helpful.

Not very good
I heard a lot of hype about this book after the broadway play came out. So, I went out and bought it. I started reading, and then started reading a few days later, then started to try and read more a few weeks later, and I am still not finished with this book after probably 8 months now. Normally, I read a good book in 2 or 3 days. So having not even finished this book yet, you must understand how bad this book is. The story line is very adult in nature and very satanic/demonic if you ask me. It just doesn't hold my interest.

It's "Wicked" alright...
I got this book a few years ago for Christmas, and I really enjoyed it! My mom gave it to me because we had tickets to see the play (AMAZING! great music too!), so I wanted to read the book. I was actually really surprised at some of the content of it, because when you hear that something was based off of the Wizard of Oz, you don't exactly think of that kind of stuff, but it still was really good. Definitely not for young kids, but I really liked it. It really gave a different perspective on the movie (The Wizard of Oz). After I read this, I couldn't watch the Wizard of Oz the same way again. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. You just think about these things differently. Overall, it was a very good book, and I really enjoyed it. : )

Wonderful book - will change your mind.
I loved the book, it was brilliant. It really made me look at Oz in a whole new light. I feel so sorry for 'the Wicked Witch of the West' now. I still love Dorothy. It really is all about the life and times of Elphaba. It was a very well written book. It was spell binding I had to finish it.

loved the play, hated the book
After seeing the musical and listening to the soundtrack countless times I was so obsessed with Wicked that I had to read the book. I was very disapointed-it was a lot different from the musical and I completelystopeed reading it-which is rare for me because I read all the time.So I wouldn't reccomend this book but I would reccomend the musical '

Wicked is amazing--but not for children
I read Wicked because i'd heard a lot of hype about the musical, and i myself loved the soundtrack. The book however, is very diffrent. It is not meant for children or for those who do not...may i say...enjoy reading very deeply in someone's love life. i myself was slightly repulsed by CERTAIN parts of the book, and felt deep sorrow and pity for poor Tibbet. Other than that, i thought wicked was pretty good. not the best, but good none the less.

Loved it
This book is very different from the popular musical of the same name, so if you saw the musical and decided to try the book, don't be surprised if you find it very different. That said, I loved this book and thought it was a fascinating look at religion, politics, and social issues. It is a pretty deep and complex book however, so unless you are a very advanced reader, I would not suggest picking up this book until at least high school. While the musical deals mainly with the themes of friendship, staying true to yourself, and that apperances aren't all that matter, the book delves deeper into religious ideas, totalitariamism, and as well as class issues and predjudice. In other words, Gregory Mcguire has created a world quite like our own. An extermely interesting study of complex characters, I would recomend this book to everyone.

Amazizing
Wicked, tells the tale of the wicked witch of the west. This book is amazing, it is very deep and political. This book would defiantly be difficult for anyone under a high school level. This book is one of my favorites and i had the chance to see the musical on Broadway and it was even better.

Wickedly Awesome
The book Wicked is the before book to the Wizard of Oz. Wicked starts off by telling the back ground info about the original characters, and then movies on to the story of the Wicked Witch, Elphaba. This book takes the term evil and gives it a whole new look. It changed the way I felt about the charters. Gregory Maquire tells us that evil is more of a stereo- type then a trait and given that chance no one is evil. In this book you follow the life of one girl and find that even heartless old women can fall in love. The story gives you a lot of back ground story about the Wicked Witch of the West and how she grew up. You find that as her story goes on its hard to hate her, and that the characters you thought where good are really not. You find out that Glenda the ¿good Witch and Elphaba were best friends and why they hate each other now. In this story you will find a tale of romance, friendship, and under it all a true fairy tale. A must read, a page turner from start to finish, I would definitely recommend it!

Outstanding book! A must read!
Almost all of my friends have either read the book, saw the movie, saw it on stage and they love it!
