I am no christian and I still found the basic premise of this book depraved. Incest and murder are the basic themes. I do not identify with the main character in the least. I have read every other book by Mrs. Gregory and have come to realise that in history there are awful things that happen, but this book just seems to compile all the terrible things people will do to get ahead into one character. It was a bit much for me.

    oh my

I agree with a lot of the other reviewers. I read the other Boleyne Girl and The Queen's Fool and LOVED them, I was unable to put them down. I was so excited at the thought of a trilogy from this author. But I am reading this book and I feel gross just reading it. I am not even interested in the story line and even though I bought the second book, I dont know if I am even going to read it. I think this is a great author based on her other books but this has not kept me interested.

    O dear!

I am very dissapointed in this novel. After reading The Other Boleyn Girl and throughly enjoying it, I was overjoyed to see that Philippa Gregory had written a trilogy. I was excited for a few weeks of enjoyable reading, but to my dismay Wideacre was no such thing. It dragged on and on not to mention the odd twists included. It was certainly not one of Gregory's best works. Don't waste your time or money attempting to read it.

    Awful book

I am so disappointed in this book. After reading 'The Queen's Fool' and 'The Other Boleyn Girl', the last being especially good, I was expecting another engrossing book. I'm about a 1/3 of the way done and I'm not sure I will continue reading it. The subject matter is disgusting and I find it difficult to keep reading as I don't find the book as well-written as the other 2 I read. If I had read this book first, I would never have read any of the author's other books. Do yourself a favor and get the above 2 mentioned books, but forget Wideacre. It is not even close to being as good as the authors later works.

An appalling book from a good author

This was absolutely ghastly. It started out okay and got worse. I actually read the second book in this trilogy and, if possible, it is even more hateful than this book. I do have to say that it's well written and other parts of the book were good, for example the historical and regional aspects were good. But the main plot was just miserable, the main character was despicable, and this was an all around awful book. Waste of time and money.

The absolute worst book I have ever read!!!!!

Ok can we just start with saying that I would give this book a zero if at all possible. The fact that this book is so repetative that had to put it down a couple of times I was so sick of everything being said over and over again. I think this author thought she would attempt a version of 'Gone with the Wind' (across the pond of course) but has only accomplished a piece of trash I wish I hadn't dropped $17.00 dollars on. The story is about Beatrice the protaganist you have neither sympathy for or can relate to. Not only does she do only evil things but apparently for no other reason than to stay on some backwater estate. Sleeps with her brother repeatedly and bares two children by him who are taken under the wing of his thankless wife. That's the book in a nutshell.... 600 pages and that's it! I am telling you here and now don't waste your time or money this book it sucks big time!!!
