The second installment of the series is not as essential as the first but better than the third. It was recorded in 1989, just before the Garth Brooks era dawned. I bought it when it came out on a double LP and later upgraded to compact disc. While the first 1972 summit was basically old-time music, this CD is a mix of styles from country gospel (Johnny Cash) to bluegrass (Jimmy Martin, New Grass Revival) to folk (John Prine) to the edge of rock (Levon Helm, Bruce Hornsby). The Dirt Band is one of the best backing combos in popular music. They never try to steal the spotlight. Some of the other accompanists are notable, especially the great Mark O'Connor. Don't let the AMG warning about a lot of gospel frighten you into missing a great listening experience.
