Poetry, Planes, and philosophy
I am amazed that I'm the first reviewed! Although I only recently read this book, it now one of my favorites. The stories are exotic, the words are poetic. Hemmingway's excitement with Jimmy Buffett's phrasing. If you have enjoyed Twain's 'Following the Equator' or anything by Conrad, this book is a treat.

Poet of the Air
Named to National Geographic's "Top Ten Adventure Books of All Time" for a very good reason, it is. Not just pilots, but anyone who has ever bumped along in a puddle jumper through a thunderstorm will relate to the emotions of flying blind. A timeless classic, with beautiful prose, and genuine excitement by a great adventurer.

Makes you want to hug mankind
I browsed a list of the 100 best books ever written and on a sidebar was "Wind, Sand and Stars" with the note that it was written "with soaring prose." ... So true. ... Not a book about flying, although flying is the tale, but about how man can conquer what he sets out to do. ... The author's true story. ... A man's book, or a young man's book - superb. ... The author was a pilot for the Free French Air Force during WWII and didn't come back from a mission. ... Also, at the back is an essay about the author's experiences witnessing the Spanish Civil War of the 1930's when the Fascists won (defeated the Nationalists) - worthwhile reading in a very different way.
