I am a retired first grade teacher who is helping a friend homeschool her kindergartener. I used this book and Sugar Snow as part of the winter unit. We were able to compare the past family and activities to the ones in her own home. We did various activities from the books like making paper dolls, bought some maple syrup sugar chunks to taste and even poured pure maple syrup over snow (shaved ice)[not in the books but tied in nicely]. The reading is simple and she was able to find words she could read. I found the books to be very enjoyable as did they.

STAR RATING NOT ACCURATE
I THINK IT IS WONDERFUL THAT THESE STORIES ARE MADE FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN AS I AM A HUGE LITTLE HOUSE FAN BUT I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED THAT BECAUSE PEOPLE NEED TO BE POLITICLY CORRECT LAURA IS PUT INTO A TIME OUT. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHANGE A CLASSIC WORK BECAUSE THEY FEEL THAT NO CHILD SHOULD BE SPANKED. THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS A TIME OUT IN PIONEER TIMES AND IN THE BOOK IT IS CLEAR THAT SHE IS SPANKED. OTHER THAN THAT I WAS HAPPY WITH THE BOOK SERIES.
