Started well. Ended poorly. Charachters were trite and situations were contrived. Whenever a situation could result in a poor choice of action, it almost always seemed to. It is not often I regret the time it took me to read a book This 1, I regret.
The title charachter has been one I have been in love with for decades. I often wondered about the origins of the Amazons and how the Island came about. These questions were answered and make up the best part of the book. Unfortunately, the rest of the book does not live up to the opening chapters. Getting the main characters into the plot used very contrived plot lines, the scenes lacked believability, and the character interaction was simply not 'real'.
It is unfortunate when a book begins with promise and then breaks down when the author forces the reader to deal with highly unlikely, contrived or simply trite situations. The willing suspension of ones sense of disbelief is a key ingredient in any story. My 'willingness' evaporated rapidly and was never rekindled. It is unfortunate, because I felt there was an excellent beginning to a story that should have come out with more willingness to believe.
