This was my first Harlan Coben novel. I came across it as a B&N Bargain Book and so glad I did! I am officially putting all of his books on my list. The story itself was interesting but there was never a dull moment. Not once did I get bored. I was constantly on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next all the way to the very end, even when I thought there was nothing else to surprise me with. The characters were all likeable but flawed making them very real and easy to relate to. I can always tell when I love a book if I can't leave it alone. I got through 1/2 the book on the first day & finished it up a few days later. Even during favorite tv shows I would find myself sneaking in some reading because I just couldn't stop! Loved it & can't wait to read more by Harlan!

Harlan's books have always been part Andrew Vachss wannabee with a suburban New Jersey twist. His heroes are not tough guys but jewish lawyers and he usually writes so dynamically well you buy all the coincidences and last minute appearances to get to some rather remarkable conclusions. I've loved all his previous work. Not this time. This time you can see the end coming real early on. I won't spoil it but if you've read Harlan before you will be very surprised when you guess correctly and he does NOT whisk the answer away like a magician. Worse, the 'hero' of this tale is just a bit too much of an Alan Alda lefty for me to buy as a real he man whenever Harland decides he should have backbone. Worse, the man is hardly above being a total fraud and hypocrite, often resorting in his own investigations into twenty year old misdeeds to tactics exactly the same as those he abhores in those he is attempting to prosecute. I found this comparison both ridiculous, typically hypocritical and awful writing construction. In short the main character is an unsympathetic hypocrite who does one thing to those he chooses to prosecute but sees no problem in employing their scorched earth tactics for his OWN ends. And this time, his use of characters from previous novels seems too much a throwaway practice. I didn't give him one star because I love all his previous work and I couldn't ever give him NO stars because, quite frankly, we are not offered that choice.

This story was very interesting until the last fifty or so pages. Was Coben under time constraints to finish this book? The ending was certainly contrived and most disappointing. This novel didn't match his other works.

    Suspenseful page turner!

20 years ago Paul Copeland and his summer sweetheart, Lucy Silverstein, ventured out into the woods at their summer camp hoping to get away from the world. What was supposed to be a romantic evening quickly turned into a murder mystery of four young teens staying at the camp, one of them Paul's sister. Although only two bodies out of the four teens were never found, Paul's Sister Camille and Gil Perez, investigators assumed they were dead and buried somewhere in the woods. 20 years later that all change. The grown up corpse of Gil Perez was found in a street ally. This sparked Paul's interest to reopen the case, hoping his sister might be still alive. Lucy and Paul reunite hoping to once and fore all find out the truth of what really happened that night in the woods. I was recommended Harlan Coben's novels due to my interest in mystery/thriller books. Not k nowing what I was getting into I choose The Woods.. As I turned the first page I soon found myself sucked into a heart racing, page turning mystery that I just couldn't put down. In my opinion though, sometimes I felt like it was dragging on. Coben could have got to the chase a lot faster and still would have written a fantastic novel. There are some sexual references and scenes in this book and wouldn't suggest it to anyone under the age of 16. Overall I give The Woods by Harlan Coben three stars.

Awesome story, but not vintage Coben

I am a huge fan of the Coben novels (Myron Bolitar might possibly be the greatest fiction character at the moment), and did like this novel quite a bit. That being said, however, this book lacked Coben's canny ability to tell a clear, swift, believable story. While it was definitely an interesting and engaging read, the characters had odd back stories, and the ending seemed a bit rushed. If you are a Coben fan I'd pick it up, but would not suggest to someone wishing to explore Coben for the first time.

    Not his usual standards

This book was ok. I was disappointed because his stories are usually much better.

I usually love reading Coben's books, and I must say I thourghly enjoyed reading this one. I ignored my husband for two days while I poured myself into this book. The twists and turns were exciting and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen in the end - but as the reviewer before stated, it ended abruptly. The ending had so much more potential. The whole plot was great, but the end was a huge let down.

    Poor ending

I have loved all of Coben's books so far. I really liked this book up until the last thirty pages or so, but the ending was a huge letdown. Get back to writing about Myron!!
