    A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF DIALOGUE

DIALOGUE, by Gloria Kempton, is a comprehensive study of the dialogue mode of fiction-writing. It¿s filled with insightful looks at the potential uses of dialogue and practical tips on how to incorporate better dialogue into fiction. If there¿s a better book devoted to the subject of dialogue, I¿m not aware of it.///// This is one of four in the Write Great Fiction series by Writer¿s Digest Books: Plot & Structure Character, Emotion & Viewpoint Description & Setting and Dialogue. Each volume provides an in-depth, thought-provoking look at its subject matter. All four belong in a novelist¿s reference library.

Write Great Fiction - Dialogue, by Gloria Kempton

If, like me, you are a novice writer and are looking to expand your knowledge and skills in a very competitive market, Write Great Fiction - Dialogue is a "must have" for your library. Not only does Gloria Kempton thoroughly cover the ins-and-outs of writing effective dialog, but she also offers tips and ideas that lead to other valuable resources writers should have in their arsenal of knowledge. For instance, I found a system of developing characters that she mentions within the book to be most useful and now employ it myself. As a writer and instructor in the art of dialog, Gloria Kempton covers everything we need to know in order to write effective dialog for today's market.

    OK- has some good pointers

I thought this book was OK, but not aqs helpful as a couple others in the "Write Great Fiction" series. Some of the ideas, tips and pointers were helpful, but the author seems to maintain that dialogue is more important than any other aspect of a story- to the detriment of things like narrative and description. Granted, the book is about dialouge and not these other things, but I just felt that something was missing.

    Make your characters come alive

Dialogue not only moves a story forward, it can help a reader get into the story and identify with your characters. A novel without dialogue is hard to read, but poorly written dialogue can turn a reader off. This little book has a wealth of tips and guides on creating realistic dialogue that helps identify your characters and keep a story flowing. A must read for anyone who wants to write good fiction.

    Entertaining and educational

Gloria Kempton's book has helped me with my writing more than any other book I've read. The text centers on dialogue, but has helped me with every aspect of my writing. No only is it the most helpful book on writing that I have ever read, but it is thoroughly entertaining. At time I found myself laughing aloud or sharing excerpts with others. Anyone would enjoy this book and be helped by it.
