The Mission (Chapter 5)
Half an hour after Jonathan woke up, everyone else woke up, too. And for an hour after that, they all went through grueling training that seemed to last forever. Jonathan saw that a few of the others seemed to find the training easy, about a quarter of them struggled just a little and it was hardly noticeable, many struggled a lot but kept pushing, and the rest tried to give up early. And now, they were fitted in training armor: Lightweight gray armor with stripes of black outlining the edges, there was one piece each to cover the shoulders, four tube-like pieces, one for each forearm and one for each calf, one piece for each thigh that looked like simply an enlarged version of the shoulder plates, and two pieces attached at the tops to cover the chest and back. All their codes had gone into a kind of shuffler, and two codes would come out to choose partners. Jonathan wasn't paying attention until Quiet, who he was supposed to call Quay, announced,"J6 and Q6." Jonathan gave a start, then looked around. Q6 had unruly black hair, not unlike Jonathan's before he cut it, blue eyes with a black stripe all the way around each, and a thin frame. Q6 was looking directly at him, like he knew who Jonathan was the whole time. They waited until the rest of the crew was partnered with someone, then Q6 glanced toward the sword fighting area. Jonathan was surprised. He'd been thinking of doing just that. Then, as if on cue, Q6 walked casually over. Jonathan could only follow. Q6 said as he walked up,"This is pointless. Why should we be training with weapons when the ship has built-in lasers to destroy the enemy for us?" Jonathan shrugged and replied,"I guess in case the enemy somehow boards our ship, they want us to be ready." Q6 just nodded and picked out a wooden sword with one edge. All the swords were wooden, the sharp edges curved and filled with a kind of ink that would show where the blow landed. Jonathan decided to take one with two edges. Q6 immediately spun and landed a blow to Jonathan's lower leg. If the sword had a sharp edge, Q6 surely would have cut clean through the armor. Then the thin kid–he couldn't be older than seventeen–turned to the side, somersaulted, and stood up to land another blow to Jonathan's neck, though he hit mercifully soft. They continued practicing, but the few hits Jonathan got on Q6 wouldn't have done much damage while Q6 would've killed Jonathan about twenty or so times. After the training session was lunch, and Jonathan scanned the cafeteria to find somewhere to sit. Most of the girls sat together, though F9 was sitting alone. All the jocks sat at a table. Some of the partners sat together. Jonathan noticed Q6 sitting alone, and went over to his table. "Hey," he said. "You have some pretty good moves. Pretty much destroyed me." Q6 was silent for a while, then said,"I've always had something of a skill with blades. I learned to hone that skill, and as you can see, I became almost unbeatable." Jonathan had laughed and agreed, and the two became friends and started hanging out. Q6 didn't really talk about himself, but he was still cool. He was fifteen, too, it turned out, just tall for his age. Then one day at lunch, D2 joined them with some other tough-looking guys. He pulled Q6 out of his seat and spat in his face,"Don't you ever try something like that again, punk!" He threw Q6 down and walked away. Jonathan looked at Q6 and saw him grinning. "Heh...so he finally figured me out..." (to be continued, as usual...)Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

fantastic resource to support budding writers
Jennifer Hallisy, a pediatric occupational therapist, has written a wonderful resource for parents and early childhood educators entitled The Write Start. In an age of e-mail and texting, the focus on writing has shifted. However, encouraging our children to write gives them a freedom of expression not found elsewhere. Was this review helpful? I wasn't certain what to expect when I began reading the book. The fact that it was written by an OT gave me hope, but I prepared myself for an instructional guide of how to teach your child. Instead, I found a fantastic resource and was delighted with many of her projects.
Hallisy speaks of the importance of play in a developing child and how it affects current and future writing skills. While I could disagree with her statement of the right way to write, her execution of supporting children as they explore both writing and themselves is unquestionable. Throughout the book, she shares wonderful ways to support children in their writing adventures, gives insight into child development as it pertains to writing, and shares numerous fun activities and ways to incorporate writing into your home and lives to support the budding writer in your family.
