Solid Work, but where's that X-factor?
John Ottman'score for X-Men 2 is...standard fare. The first track, "Suite from X2" is BRILLIANT! The music cracks along for the first minute and a half, then slides into more subtle elegaic territory, before repeating the opening minute's theme at the end of the track. However, the rest of the score fails to keep up to the high standard set by the first track. Cue some rather corny titles ("Storm's Perfect Storm" & "Sneaky Mystique")and the package as a whole may appear to be a letdown. "Mansion Attack" and "Getting Out Alive" have some inspired bombastic moments but they suffer from lengthy lulls, causing some listeners to descend into boredom. The theme from the very beginning of the score isn't repeated until the very end with the final track, "We're Here to Stay". The bulk of the score is more subtle, beautiful music ("Finding Faith"). "Cerebro" doesn't have quite the same "umph" factor that the "Cerebro" track from Michel Kamen's X-Men score. Sadly, Morzart's Requiem isn't included in this package. Compared to most summer blockbuster scores, X2 stands head and shoulders above them but when compared to Superman's, or Batman's or Spider-Man's respective scores, X2 falls kinda flat. Still, the first track is worth the price of the CD.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
