“You Are My Sunshine: Toot & Puddle,” written by Holly Hobbie and shared in an audio version by Nick Sullivan, is another must-have for a child’s collection! Toot is feeling blue although it is a beautiful day out. Toot is feeling down about himself and everything. He mopes around for days. Puddle and Tulip try to cheer him up by inviting friends over to play, making his favorite cobbler, and taking him rafting; however, none of these things seems to cheer up Toot. All of a sudden one morning after a big thunderstorm, Toot is feeling better about everything. Sometimes something like that is needed to clear the air, as well as friends to make everything better.

Toot is feeling blue and everyone has moments like this. However, Puddle and Tulip are not used to Toot being like this and they want to help cheer him up. This is a good story to share with children to teach them that people do have days when they feel down and this is normal and it is nice to try and help cheer them up, but sometimes they just need time to work through the “mopey” feelings. It is important to still be a good friend during these times and be there and show you care as Tulip and Puddle show throughout this book as Toot concludes, “friends are necessary.” Toot, Puddle and Tulip are characters that young children will love to listen to and spend time with. They are sure to learn good lessons from listening to the story.
