Great book - a "must" for budding authors!!
"Your First Novel" is the best all around writing and publishing reference I have discovered as a novice author! Within this book, you will enjoy the writing expertise and guidance of brilliant author Laura Whitcomb ("A Certain Slant of Light", "The Fetch", "Novel Shortcuts"). You will also be afforded the invaluable insight and consultation on the business side of writing by Ann Rittenberg, storied and highly regarded literary agent and principle of Ann Rittenberg Literary Agency, Inc. of New York. If you're just getting started, or even if you have finished a book or two, I highly recommend "Your First Novel". Whether you are seeking writing advice or tips on best methods for getting the attention of literary agents and publishers, get a copy of "Your First Novel". Brilliant.

Different from the others
I loved this book. I have read many novel-writing reference books, and this one provided information different from the rest-particularly the section written by literary agent Ann Rittenburg. No, it doesn't tell you exactly how to write a novel or how to submit a manuscript, but it gives tips and addresses many topics that a novice writer is curious about but is not quite sure who or what to ask 'such as auctions, submitting to multiple agents, etc.'.

SAVE YOUR MONEY, SKIP THIS ONE
I ordered my copy of Your First Novel, by Ann Rittenberg and Laura Whitcomb, with high hopes. But the book failed to meet my expectations. Save your money and skip this one./// As a newly issued, concept-to-publication book clearly targeted to novice writers, Your First Novel could have achieved the following: 1)Adequately cover the basics of writing a novel for the first time, 2)Discredit some of the misinformation about novel-writing that has been published in the past, and 3) Provide ground-breaking insight and guidance not already presented in the numerous ¿how-to¿ books that precede it./// Sadly, Your First Novel fails to deliver on all three counts.

Worth Owning
There are so many books on eriting on the msrket, it makes me thing some unpublished novelists decide a book on writing novels is easier to sell than a novel. However, this book is a very practical and useful read. All new or aspiring authors should have a copy.

First novelists- Don't submit ANYTHING without reading this first!
This book has been an eye-opening, inspiring and fantastic resource. Written by professionals in the field, it tells you not just how to get published, but also how to edit and review your work and even a step-by-step time line, detailing exactly how to get your book ready for an editor.

It includes information on choosing an editor, a publisher, and an agent. It has solid, no-nonsense advice on how to get the most out of your time and money. It gives a dose of realism to your dreams- with statistics that show how difficult it is to get published, but advice and encouragement as well- so no matter how difficult it will be and how discouraged you get, it gives you hope and inspiration to keep working!
Definitely highly recommended for any first time author who wants to get into the game with a solid knowledge base and practical advice! -

A reviewer
Your First Novel was a good 'get started' book. It gave me hope, and good tips on how to get organized and started. I enjoyed it! I felt it helped calm my nerves about trying to get my book written and published. Not sure how to write or get published. I recommend this book!
