Putumayo Records began in 1993 as a side industry that grew out of the Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975, and the label has since grown into its own entity (Storper sold the clothing company part in 1997), specializing in smooth, upbeat, and varied international music compilations that illustrate the imprint's motto of "guaranteed to make you feel good." A children's imprint, Putumayo Kids, was established in 1999, and has since issued several children's compilations, including this one, which centers on performances of classic American folk songs, all arranged and presented much like the adult compilations, only with more of an ear to singalong concepts. ~ Steve Leggett
