I’ve said this before, but truly unique zombie stories seem to be few and far between these days. I’m not sure why, but it seems like many authors are content with rehashing the same genre staples over and over again. For this reason, those few original zombie books that I’ve run across hold a special place of honor in my literary collection. AMONGST THE DEAD, the newest release from author David Bernstein, now joins that prestigious list. This book is a fresh and inviting entry into the zombie genre, and is the first in a line of great reads to come. As I said, this is not your standard zombie-apocalypse-survival story. It’s much more than that. This is a story about a girl who comes of age in a decimated society. There’s no birthday slumber parties, no school dances, no pageantry...nothing that the average 12 year-old girl should be experiencing. Instead, Riley’s days are filled with fear and dread, not to mention the realization that her days might be numbered. AMONGST THE DEAD is a captivating and engaging story that aims straight for the head. Author Bernstein weaves a simple but brutally entertaining storyline that is sure to capture the imaginations of even the most die-hard of zombie fiction fans. Bernstein’s prose is simple but strong, which allows the story to move along at an excellent pace. His voice is unique and his characterizations are powerful, giving the reader many reasons to actually care about the people within the story and what is happening to them. The zombie action is also written very well, with plenty of gut-crunching gore and cliff-hanging chapter endings. If I were forced to find a flaw with AMONGST THE DEAD, I don’t think I could. The story is tight, the world-building is spot on, and the characters are likable. Not to mention the zombies...they’re slow, lumbering ex-humans that will gladly tear your skin off in strips if you give them the chance. You just can’t ask for much more than this when it comes to zombie fiction. I give AMONGST THE DEAD two decomposing thumbs up, and I highly recommend this book to anyone that likes zombies or just plain horror in general. You’ll have to wait a couple of weeks until it’s released in stores, so make a note on your calendar to snag it. Definitely give this one a look.
