Lady Barbara Manfred ("Babe" to Regency society) was known for her fast ways. Past time for some courageous relative to take her in hand. Lord Clivedon had some interesting ideas for her reclamation--staying with starchy Aunt Graham, the introduction of the sterling (and boring) Lord Ellingwood, instruction from the overbearing Lady Angela, fending off nutty Lord

Babe is one of my favorite Joan Smith novels. Babe is the family rebel and misfit, and her family closes ranks to make sure she is straightened out. They don't want her fast behavior reflecting on the family. Lord Clivedon takes despotic charge, housing Babe with the most repressive Tartar of a female relative he can find. Babe chafes at her bonds, stepping over the line at every opportunity to engage in reckless behavior. Over time, as she realizes that her shaky upbringing has led her astray, she vows to change her ways. Lord Clivedon approves until he realizes that he may have broken the rebellious spirit of a lady whose wanton ways are actually very appealing to him. Joan Smith's wonderful novels are gems. Her heroines are feisty, intelligent, fully developed characters. Her novels are full of intelligence, humor and witty repartee; her supporting characters are often hilarious. These are Regencies for thinking women. Thank goodness they are available as ebooks--my editions are falling apart because I've read them so many times! There are a zillion historical bodice-rippers with heroines making stupid decisions in historically inaccurate situations. Reading them is like drinking a warm, flat beer. When you want chilled, sparkling champagne, reach for a Joan Smith novel.
