From the first moment that Ben sees Laura, she seems too good to be true. Stunning, elegant, adventurous, and intolerably charming, she is everything that he wants in a woman. I was really glad to finally have a finished, polished version of Beyond the Palace at my fingertips. I remember reading the draft way back in newspaper class, and it was amazing, although I had mostly forgotten how it goes before opening it up again. Anyway, before I go on, I must stop and say: BUY THE BOOK. If you love Bruce Springsteen, if you love music, if you just want a damn good read. It will pull you in from the beginning but the last third (the home stretch, as I call it) won't let you go. Strong character development, intense drama, some angst, witty dialogue, what more could you want? To me, this feels like a cross of High Fidelity and the Great Gatsby. What does that mean? A phenomenal book - there's a troubled sort of romance going on, but even though Ben is the protagonist and narrator, there would be no story without Laura.

This is a fabulous relationship story about Bruce Springsteen tramps. You don't have to be a Springsteen fan to enjoy it!! Very well written!

I have actually read this book twice now. Mostly because it is so consuming you can't put it down! If you love huge concerts, if you've listened to Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, or if you have ever had a complex relationship, you will immediately find yourself drawn into this story. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do.
