This is a great book. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a book about 19th century photo processes or early photo history. Christopher James gives a description of each process, a brief history and a "recipe" so to speak on how to do each process. Also he includes lots of pictures and the narrative is easy to read and understand. This was the only text book I ever read cover to cover my entire college career - which says a lot for this book. I also did a work shop with Christopher James and he's about as eccentric as serious photographers come, but he's very knowledgeable about alternate processes. This is the second edition - he's revised and added more information to some of the processes and adjusted some of the chemical recipe's from the first edition and he also includes a few more processes to try. Awesome book. You've got to try reading it.
