I remember flipping through the channels as a wee little guy and SUPERGIRL was on. I was kind of turned off by it, I was more of a SUPERMAN guy. However, when I recently purchased the SUPERGIRL widescreen collector's edition, I kicked myself for not giving it a chance earlier. It was absolute good fun to watch as SUPERGIRL (portrayed by Helen Slater in her big-screen debut) leaves her Kryptonian rock of a planet (Argo City) behind and shoots straight to Earth to recover the Omegahedron, a life source for her planet that was accidentally shot out to space. In the process, Selena (Faye Dunaway, in her silliest role as a black magic sorceress-in-training) gets dibs on the Pokeball-resembled Omegahedron when it lands a little too conveniently into her cheese dip while out on a picnic. From here on, Selena literally takes the ball and runs, bent on the aspect of world domination with her newfound toy. Meanwhile, the innocent Supergirl seems as if she's ignoring the fact that her planet could shrivel up and die in a few days if the Omegahedron isn't recovered soon. Instead, she enrolls in an all-girls' school and learns the way of an Earthling life in which seems to take quite some time; nevermind the fact that the last survivors of Krypton could die while she's out prancing around on Earth. The REAL fun begins once Selena detects Supergirl's threatening presence and steals her newfound Earthling man, Ethan, leading to a nasty catfight involving the natural power of the good against the evils of black magic. To accompany this wonderfully silly adventure is Jerry Goldsmith's astounding score for the film, which practically makes up for the film's absurdity and crazy dialogue. Kudos to Goldsmith for creating a unique theme for SUPERGIRL without having to borrow from John Williams' score for the original SUPERMAN. I have watched SUPERGIRL a total of 6 times since I bought it and regardless of its wackiness, it still appeals to me as a great film for the young at heart, like me!
