Debra Holland's book on Grief and Grieving includes a section on how to support the bereaved. For this alone, the book is worth reading, but I bought her book to help me deal with a process that to me seemed never ending, that is, mourning the death of my husband. In her book she explains grief. A grieving person has as many misconceptions about bereavement as the people around her. After reading the book, I knew someone understood. I wasn't alone. I was, in spite of my erratic behaviour, normal. Although normality exists in many forms, reading that others experience the same feelings and behaviours as me is as welcome as a heartfelt hug. Although I have to admit to a few healing tears during the reading, without this book, I wouldn't be looking forward to the most joyful Xmas I have experienced in many years and so I also admit to being very grateful to Ms Holland for writing her Essential Guide to Grief and Grieving.

Grief/crisis counselor Holland draws on personal insights and experiences as well as established practices and knowledge in the field to create an accessible book for anyone suffering a loss or trauma, or wishing to help someone who has. The death of a loved one, a physical injury or illness, financial setbacks and other tragedies and blows affect different people in different ways. Holland discusses the range of reactions, acknowledging and respecting the individual¿s unique emotions. This is not a book that tells you how to feel or what to do, but rather one that, by providing examples, suggestions and validation, facilitates working through the grieving process. Written in easy-to-read fashion, it¿s well-organized, with plenty of summations and lists to clarify its points. Throughout, Holland¿s gentle voice provides reassurance. I¿ve been through all too many losses in my life, and wish I¿d had this book available earlier. Highly recommended.

A fantastic guide to help any person grieving or dealing with a person who is dealing with loss. Everyone deals with loss different, yet there are so many misconceptions of how one should feel or deal with loss. A must read.
