Flights of Loveby Bernhard Schlink
Bernhard Schlink brings to these seven superbly crafted stories the same sleek concision and moral acuity that made The Reader an international bestseller. His characters–men with importunate appetites and unfortunate habits of deception–are uneasily suspended between the desire for love and the impulse toward flight.

Quite possibly I'm the only reader to plod my way through the first 3 of these troubling short stories. Would love to know if anyone else successfully finished the book. The stories all have a gnawingly depressing feel. I'd have to be a masochist to continue reading, or on mood-elevating drugs. Bummer. To be fair, I wouldn't be surprised if much was lost in the translation, as this collection of not-short-enough stories was translated from the author's German. Hardly a light, loving read. Had mistakenly thought it would be a collection of endearing tales, possibly with a Jewish flavor, that would make a sweet anniversary gift for friends. Evidently NOT! Flights of Love? I had 'reservations' but canceled my flight.
