Overview

Florestine is the story of a mixed race woman, born and raised in antebellum New Orleans who became the wife of a white transplanted Maryland planter.

Plaçage was a common practice in that area at the time because it afforded young, beautiful mulatto women the opportunity to have lifestyles that were less harsh than that of other slaves but Florestine chose not to go into that type of relation ship with her intended.

The couple moved to the Natchitoches, Louisiana area, and for a time lived in a famous mansion in St. Maurice. They had thirteen children together.

About the Author

Tracey Richardson was born Celestine Sands in 1947 in Marshall, Texas. She moved to Dallas as a single mom in 1970. She was always an avid reader, well rounded in various genres, especially historical novels. She has been writing since she was 16 as a way to cope under stressful situations. She has turned many of life's challenges into fictional works with strong leading women characters.

In 2010, knowing that retirement was on the horizon, she started pulling together this body of work. It was at that time she decided to undertake a major writing project involving one of her ancestors - Florestine Boult.

Florestine took two years to complete and involved many hours of research, including a trip to Natchitoches and St. Maurice, Louisiana, to take a look at the place where Florestine and other family members lived and conducted their business.

It was a journey worth taking.
