Forgotten Ally: China's World War II, 1937-1945by Rana Mitter
The epic, untold story of China’s devastating eight-year war of resistance against Japan
For decades, a major piece of World War II history has gone virtually unwritten. The war began in China, two years before Hitler invaded Poland, and China eventually became the fourth great ally, partner to the United States, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain./b>

This book is an excellent review of the war between Japan and China that lasted from 1937-1945. It is less of a military history and more of political and cultural history though. It is a thorough recounting of events - and the three leaders that lead China through those years - that shaped the current nation of China. It does not shy away from criticism not only of the three leaders (Mao, Chiang and Wang) but of the involvement of foreign powers outside of China. The reason that I give it four stars instead of five is that I thought it would have had more military history in it than it did and thus was a ore difficult read for me than I expected. It is however deserving of four stars even still. After reading his I feel I understand the events that shaped our modern world a little better than before. It is certainly worth reading if you are at all interested in World War II history.
