The Pye family lives in Cranbury, CT, which is based upon the author's hometown of West Haven, CT. Mr. Pye is a famous birdman who handles all the nation's bird problems. Mrs. Pye is the youngest mother in town. Ten-year-old Jared (Jerry) wants to be a rock man. Nine-year-old Rachel wants to be a birdman like her father. And there is Gracie-the-cat. Also living in town are Grandpa and Gramma and their son Bennie, who is Jerry and Rachel's uncle even though he is only three. Jerry wants a puppy, and Mr. and Mrs. Speedy have a new puppy that they will sell for a dollar, but Jerry doesn't have a dollar, and someone else wants to buy the pup so he has to have the dollar by Saturday evening. That very day his tall friend, Sam Doody, offers Jerry a dollar to dust the pews in the church building for him since Sam has to go to town to buy a new suit. With this dollar, Jerry is able to buy the puppy, which the Pyes name Ginger. Ginger is a very smart dog. One day he escapes from the Pyes' yard, tracks Jerry to school, and even climbs the fire escape to find Jerry's classroom. However, for several days, Jerry and Rachel see a mysterious yellow hat following them, around their yard, and in various places where they happen to be. Then on Thanksgiving Day, when Ginger is let out into the fenced in back yard, he disappears. Someone had to steal him. The Pyes and all their friends search for their dog through Christmas, New Year's, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Easter, and even to Jerry's birthday which is May 29. Will they ever find Ginger Pye? When I finished the first chapter of this book, I knew that I was going to like it, and it did not disappoint me. Ginger Pye won the John Newbery Medal in 1952 and is the kind of book for which the award was made, as opposed to the pathetic drivel which passes for "award-winning" young people's literature today. It is a pleasant story that any youngster who has ever loved a pet will appreciate. Some people may not care for the way the author sometimes chases "rabbit trails," but to me this just makes the account seem homey and chatty. There is a sequel, Pinky Pie. Additionally, Eleanor Estes has written four books about the Moffats, who also live in Cranbury and are friends of the Pyes. These are The Moffats, The Middle Moffat, Rufus M., the latter two of which won Newbery honors, and The Moffat Museum, as well as a short novel entitled The Hundred Dresses which was also a Newbery Honor book. The Horn Book called Ginger Pye "An outstanding book," and I heartily agree.

If you love dogs and a story you can really get into you'll love Ginger Pye. This book is about a brother and sister named Jerry and Rachel that get a very smart puppy. They name it Ginger. On Thanksgiving Day they think someone stole her. They search the whole town but there's no sign of her. This is my favorite book because I love dogs and I love a story that keeps me wondering! Will Jerry and Rachel ever find Ginger? Read this book to find out.

My mom used to read this book to my siblings & I every year, right after school let out for the summer. Fond memories. That aside, this is a wonderful book for kids. The characters are well established & the storyline flows well with a spooky, mystery twist. I would recommend everything by this author to any child (or adult). I cannot wait to read it to my daughter.

Jerry and Rachel Pye are two excited kids. They just got a new puppy named Ginger! Ginger Pye, that is. Ginger is loyal and will do whatever it takes to make Jerry happy. One day, Ginger gets curious and secretly follows Jerry to School. He climbs the fire escape to Jerry’s classroom, and becomes famous! On Thanksgiving night, the house is buzzing with excitement! Only to find out Ginger has been kidnapped! The kids search days on end, trying to find Ginger. Will they ever find Ginger? I was not very fond of this book. First of all, so many things were going on at once, it was confusing. Second, it wasn’t going anywhere. The dog was kidnapped early in the book, stalled for 200 pages, then they ended the book. Thirdly, it was weird. Just weird. I don’t know how to explain it. So over all, it was confusing, weird, and didn’t go anywhere.

The author must be from a small and close community. She gives the wonderful image of a close family

I enjoyed the book (full version) but the sample wasn't very good because you could read very little of a big book. Otherwise it was great, and I recomend it to anyone.

Reading this book makes you feel lucky about what we have. Ginger Pye is hilarious, romantic and very sad in some parts. It is an award winner of the Newbery Medal. It all starts when Mrs. Speedy's puppies were born. Jerry Pye, a young boy at age ten, has his eye on a certain young pup, but so does someone else and he will do anything to get it, even steal it! Ginger Pye deserved the Newbery Medal.

A boy named Jerry and his sister Rachel want a dog. Their teacher's dog is having puppies. Jerry found a dog that he really liked. He named it Ginger Pye. As the dog got older it became more smart and more intelligent. But there is a stranger that also wants Ginger. The stranger stole Ginger but Ginger got away fast and went back to Jerry and Rachel. Ginger, Jerry, and Rachel never saw the stranger again. I kind of liked Ginger Pye. I liked how smart and intelligent the dog and children were. I also liked how there was a little bit of mystery. I didn't like the stanger but he was ok. I would love to read it again.

Ginger Pye All Jerry pye ever wanted was a dog, a smart friendly dog he could teach tricks and play with. When an opportunity arrives at Speedy’s barn, Jerry along with his sister, Rachel waste no time thinking of ways to earn enough money to buy the puppy. The pyes name their newest member Ginger Pye and all is well in the pye household. Well …that is until Ginger is dognapped on Thanksgiving Day. Jerry and Rachel are pretty sure it’s the ‘Unsavory Character’ that has been bothering the pyes family since little Ginger was brought home. Everyone could see Ginger belonged with the pye family…… Join Jerry, Rachel, Uncle Ben, and the rest of the pye family on their search in the small town of Cranbury for their missing pye member. I gave this book four out of five stars. I gave it this because of the disappointingly sad ending when the pyes found out what happen to Ginger when he was gone, but other than that I thought that this book was very captivating and had a very interesting plot.
