Too much of a good thing…

With her long ponytail and sparkling green eyes, Tessa Donovan looks more like the girl next door than a businesswoman—or a heartbreaker. Which may explain why Detective Luke Asher barely notices her when he arrives to investigate a break–in at her family's brewery. He's got his own problems—starting

This book was just what I want in a contemporary romance. I little conflict... just enough to make you wonder how and when they will get together, a lot of humor and a lot of sex. Victoria Dahl is fast approaching the top of my favorite authors list. I read Eric's story in the short Just One Taste in the anthology: The Guy Next Door. This was a little mini kick off for the trilogy coming out this fall that starts with Good Girls Don't (and will be followed in October by Bad Boys Do and in November by Real Men Will). I loved Eric's story and was ready for the conclusion so when I started this first book I was disappointed to realize that Eric's story will be the end of the trilogy. So I was a little bitter when I started. Tess, the main character and little sister of two adoring and over protective big brothers, reminded me a lot of Molly from Talk Me Down and I was all ready to dislike the book on the grounds it was too similar. I don't know how far into it I was before I completely forgot that idea. I won't give a plot synopsis... I assume you've read that much already but here is the information I usually need before I decide if I'm going to read a book: Third person with his/hers POV (no secondary story lines or other POV to keep up with) He is a cop with a heart of gold who everyone thinks is a slimy bad ass and she is the innocent little sister who isn't so innocent. Best lines: "His skin was tan, and creases around his eyes made it look like he often squinted thoughtfully into the distance while puzzling out an investigation." "Oooh, gut instincts and fingerprints. And she could just make out the edge of his shoulder holster when he put his hands in his pockets." "Right now, he'd give anything to be back in Boulder, in his car next to his secretive and pregnant partner and not having sex with a nonvirgin woman who'd probably never speak to him again." And now the HOTTEST lines: Luke put his mouth to her thigh, then her hip, her belly, her waist. All she could do was breathe until the dark spots in her vision faded. As Luke stood, she kicked the pile of clothing off her feet and fell to her knees. "Tessa--" "Shut up." His back thunked against the wall when she swung him around, but before he could protest, she'd worked his buckle open and reached for his zipper. So, yes, I would recommend this book. : ) More of this review can be found on my blog: Batteries and Bubbly

I had no idea how good this story was going to be. I loved the closeness of the family. The fact that no guy is good enough for their innocent little sister. The older brother, Eric, takes all the responsibility and runs the show since their parents passed away when they were younger. Jamie being the youngest is sort of a screw up and a ladies man. Then there is Tessa who is the glue, the one who does everything in her power to keep everything together and everyone happy. I just really loved their relationship. Like for instance, when Tessa leaves in the middle of the work day and claims she is going to the doctors, Eric asks "What's wrong?", to get them off her back she tells them that she is going to the gynecologist." Eric's face turns bright red and he steps back so fast that he pumps into the door jam. She tells them it is just a normal check up, that she isn't "engaged in anything". At that point both of her brothers back out of her office in horror. I also enjoyed that the story didn't just focus on Tessa and her brothers at the brewery but also on Luke and his job as a detective as well. I of course loved the interaction between Luke and Tessa as well. I really enjoyed the easy flow of their dialogue. Even though there might not have been a lot going on at the time, the way they interacted with each other keeps you entertained. Like when Luke and Tessa walk into the back of the brewery where the "brew master" Wallace is, to ask him if he recognizes the suspect in the photo. They notice that he is heading out the door with a "date" which just so happens to be another guy. After Wallace leaves Luke says "I had no idea Grizzly Adams was gay." Tessa- "He's not. Grizzly Adams is enthusiastically bisexual." Luke- "Oh. That's... Okay, let's stop calling him that. It's affecting my childhood memories. I loved that show."
