I will keep this one, and go on re-reading it. Faith, or a sense of the numinous were never problems for me, but it was liberating to see prayer freed from any specific religion, even my own. This is about the power of prayer, however prayer is presented to God, whether for His will to be done, or as a prayer for specific ends. Dossey makes the case, one which should be obvious but most assuredly is not, that to understand the implications of prayer answered, is to change our sense of what human existence is. That the power of prayer could perhaps be demonstrated, despite all of the potential problems, was no surprise. What was a surprise was Dossey¿s larger argument, that our most `scientific¿ science, quantum physics, is tending to validate the old religious truths. For example, it is an old idea of religious philosophy that every place in the universe, and every moment in time, are here and now for God; and now quantum physics seems to be looking at things the same way.

Healing Words is one book I couldn't put down. From the moment I read the first page, I was drawn into this fascinating account of the scientific findings regarding prayer. Having seen the power of both prayer and faith manifest in very physical recoveries from illness, I didn't need to be convinced that prayer worked. To see the results of the exhaustive research that Dr. Dossey helped conduct and review, however, strengthened my certainty that there is indeed a wonderful power that links all sentient life into one. If Dr. Dossey's findings do not demonstrate that contemporary science needs to look deeper, I do not know what will. I have purchased this book and given it as a gift to those whom I thought needed it with excellent results. This book marks the turning point into a new understanding of how we can facilitate well being in each other in those quiet moments when we take the time to pray.
