Production duties on this LP are split between several people. The consequence is a Hydra-headed Marianne Faithfull. Beck Hansen's hand is the heaviest: the Beck-produced tracks are simply Miss Faithfull singing vocals on Beck singles. Dave Stewart's production of 'Nico' reminds one of why how and when the Eurythmics became boring. In the plus column is Jarvis Crocker's track 'Sliding through Life on Charm'; Crocker succeeds (where Beck fails) because Crocker has produced a Marianne Faithfull song. 'I'm On Fire' is the track to which I have most often returned. Producer Billy Corgan has lain a noisesome and plush wall-of-sound backdrop to Miss Faithfull's groaning, fatigued-and-romantic lyric of the intimacy of mid-life renaissance.
