David L. Robbins' narrative skills shine through clearly with this novel, possibly my favorite of all of his books. He is able to put you right into the story, whether it be the tank drivers seat, the mind of an old Cossack, the cockpit of a 'Night Witch' flight, the dust and noise of the Battle Of Kursk. The research is obvious, its expression creating the fabric for the telling of a great story of a desperate time. Having served as a tank driver myself I can say that I could feel the cold steel skin and attendant noisy vibrations surround me again in the pages of this excellent novel. This book and its author are in the top tier of the historical fiction genre.

Another astounding work of historical fiction. For those seeking to 'live' through important events during World War II, this book should be at the top of your list to read. Multiple characters, not just German and Soviet armies, are provided. Deep understanding into the tactics, equipment and social impact of World War II on the region are expertly provided.
