I enjoyed the book and while there may be information that a new runner might find useful, by and large I didn't really pick anything up I had not see elsewhere. I think Higdon is geared more to the mainstream runner and not as much the high end competitive runner. If you are just starting out and are looking for basic information, this would be helpful. If you have some running under your' belt already and your' looking for detailed plans and more in depth information I would recommend Daniels or Pfitz instead.

This book was just the help I needed to help me run my first marathon. It was extremely helpful from the start of my training all the way to the finish line. I have to credit my hard training and Hal Higdon for helping me beat my goal time by 20 minutes. His down to earth advice for all levels of runners as well as his sense of humor make it required reading for anyone wanting to run a marathon!!!
