This excellent little book is an attempt to read Mark's gospel in abstraction from the other (later) canonic gospels. It's theme is Jesus' road to the cross and the disciples' failure to assume leadership of the new movement. In Kelber's reading, the disciples 'never get it' and fail to follow Jesus to Galilee after the resurrection. The women fail to deliver the message from 'the young man' and the disciples stay in Jerusalem rather than follow Jesus. This is an excellent companion text to Kelber's later more challenging work 'The Oral and the Written Gospel'. This book asks the reader to let Mark's gospel speak on its own terms. Highly recommended.
