Let me first say that I am a long time fan of Nylund's, so know that when I started reading this Mortal Coils I was rather biased. But I'm not writing this review for the people who have never heard of Nylund, but for the throngs of Halo fans out there that are afraid Mortal Coils sucks because it's not another Halo book. Let's dispel that lie right now; Mortal Coils is amazing. To be honest, like most people, I was rather upset when I first found out that Mortal Coils was not another Halo novel. After all, that is what got me reading Nylund's work. But the action that Ghost of Onyx did, Coils does better. The origin story that the Fall of Reach did, Coils does better. Mortal Coils surpasses everything else in every way. Which is saying a lot considering Onyx is one of my all time favorite books. I bought Coils when it first came out but it took me a while before I got around to reading it (even longer before I wrote its long overdue review). I have to say I absolutely loved it. The words captured me from the first page; it was as if every sentence dripped with Nylund's love for his story; from the descriptions to the twists to the dialog to the capturing of the awkward-yet-hilariousness of being a teenager. This is truly amazing stuff. But what makes this tale ever greater, is it culmination of all mythologies. Now, I'm not mythology buff, but I am a fan. And the way Nylund ties so much popular lore together is astounding. Also, I was thoroughly impressed with Nylund's skill at not making anything too gratuitous or over-the-top; there's not much cussing and there's no sex. But the amazing part is, you don't miss any of that stuff because of how intense this story is and how artistically it is written. This is by far my favorite book of the years and a great read/buy for anyone. Here's to hoping the sequel, All That Lives Must Die, can live up to the awesome potential laid out by its predecessor.

What is the Ashen?
&nbsp &nbsp - The Ashen is a group of outcasted felines. They prey on the resources of the other groups of cats know as Clans.
What do the Ashen do?
&nbsp &nbsp - Usually, it is just infiltrating their territory and stealing their prey, but sometimes it goes as far as raiding the Clan itself and stealing kits.
Who can join the Ashen?
&nbsp &nbsp - Any outcasted, exiled, or banished cat can join us. Just as long as you are willing to do anything to survive.
What are the rules of the Ashen?
&nbsp &nbsp - The rules are simple.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 1. Obey the leaders. Always.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 2. Be prepared for anything.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 3. Respect those who deserve respect.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 4. Remain loyal at all times.
&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 5. Remember that is is kill or be killed.
OOC/General RP Rules:
- Do not godmod. Ever.
- Be active as much as possible.
- Advertise! This is what will make or brake us!
- Keep OOC talk to a minimum.
- Be realistic, especially when fighting or hunting. (i.e. a kit-sized cat would not be able to hurt a full-grown warrior much.)
- Have good grammar.
- NO foxes, badgers, etc. . . They will kill a cat if given the chance.
- Take anything else than sharing tongues with your lover to a different result.
- Use Warrior's speech and not twoleg speech.
- Keep the male:female ratio as even as possible.
- Forcemating is not banned, but it is highly looked down upon. (It is only not banned because of the unsafe environment the Ashen would live in.)
- Mix up the characters a bit! Not everyone needs to be a black cat with red or blue eyes and idiotically long claws!
- When hunting, feel free to go to other Clans' territories. Just be descrete about it (don't go bursting into their camp and tell them you are there.)
- There will be 3 leaders at once to ensure that one is almost always on. Other than leaders, there are no ranks.
Biographies go at result 4; be sure to make one ASAP. Only cats with biographies will be chosen for leadership.
