Description: This book, written by obstetricians from Singapore, is intended to be a guide both for patients considering pregnancy and those already pregnant. The information is basic and presented for the most part at a lay person's level.
Purpose: It is intended as a source of information for women of child bearing age, for those considering pregnancy and those already pregnant or postpartum. It can be likened to a manual of pregnancy, with the information frequently presented in a question/answer format. Any book intended to provide information to better the health of women and pregnancy is a worthy endeavor and the authors do a good job of packing a lot of information into this one.
Audience: This book is written for patients. The authors are a group of four obstetrician/gynecologists from Singapore, practicing at the KK Women's Hospital. Collectively, they appear to be committed to education, but they do not seem to have contributed much to peer-reviewed journals.
Features: This book takes patients from conception (with some information on preconception) through labor and delivery, with some postpartum and newborn information. However, it is not well written. There are frequent errors (Figure 19.1, where is the arrow?) and typos, and the language is often choppy and hard to follow. Some statements are overly simplistic and sometimes misleading. ("The aim of genetic testing is to allow you to predict if you will deliver a normal baby.") The section on prenatal stimulation (playing music, sounds, etc., to improve outcomes) is presented as fact, but this has never been proven in carefully constructed trials. For the most part, the information is accurate and helpful, but some information is questionable (i.e. recommending folic acid at a dose of FIVE mg for every patient prenatally). The book has some major strengths, including chapter 15 (Dos and Don'ts of Pregnancy), and the sections of frequently asked questions. Many illustrations and tables are helpful and easy to read and follow.
Assessment: This book contains a lot of good information, but it is not well written and includes errors. I would not recommend spending money on it. I see it more as a book for waiting rooms or exam rooms. The only way I would recommend it to a patient is if she could get it free and understand that there are some shortcomings.
