Out of the Fog - Into the Light
”It just feels dirty to me mom.” Who knew that a simple sentence would become a complex pattern of tasks, habits and demands that defied logic and life as we recognized it? Contamination…nonsensical scrubbing of the human anatomy… Merciless repetitions of hygiene run amuck…teeth tipping…bird baths… abnormalcy skyrocketing out of control… raging word wars… suicide attempts. The “disorder” had taken hostages, and was holding our son’s life for ransom.

Out of the Fog - Into the Light tells the story of our family’s fight against PANDAS - a subgroup of OCD: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. When our son was diagnosed with OCD/PANDAS, our family physician advised “…go anywhere in the country to find a doctor that will take your son’s case…I feel like I’m out of my league.” Feeling abandoned, we mustered the strength, spirit, and tenacity to do just that – venture out on our own in search of answers and healing.

Unlike any other book on OCD, Out of the Fog - Into the Light offers a unique perspective on the healing possibilities of natural medicine, and the courage it took to journey down the road less traveled. In three phases of treatment, Out of the Fog - Into the Light chronicles our three year “ride” aboard the PANDAS rollercoaster, the physical challenges and raw emotions our family faced, as we battled to restore our son’s health. As caregivers, we searched for the answers to a myriad of unparalleled questions the disorder presents…and made the difficult decisions the disorder demands. While giving each family member’s unique perspective, Out of the Fog - Into the Light reveals the courage it took to embrace the alternative opportunities that few are familiar with.

Our story will inspire families dealing with OCD/PANDAS, struggling with a chronically ill child, or those interested in the prospect of alternative medicine. Equally as important, the book emphasizes the triumph of keeping the faith, while traveling down a seemingly hopeless path.

About the Author

As primary caregiver to her son Dan, Beth Eberhardt gained years of first-hand experience in treating and overcoming the sudden-onset symptoms of OCD associated with PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections). She also holds a bachelor's degree in Nursing, having specialized in Pediatrics. Beth made extensive use of her charting skills when documenting her family's trials, tribulations and successes in battling PANDAS. It was from her daily notes that this book was written.

Forever changed by this experience, and driven to become an advocate for alternative medicine's potential, Beth returned to school to broaden her knowledge of homeopathy. In addition to her nursing degree, she now holds certificates in Homeopathy, Holistic Health, Nutrition and Herbal Medicine.

Beth's commitment to increasing awareness of OCD/PANDAS has led her to begin public speaking on the disorder. Beginning in 2010, she has given PANDAS awareness presentations to elementary school teachers, high school teachers, church groups, daycare providers, and individual family units. Beth also holds current membership in the IOCDF (International OCD Foundation).
