Don't be deterred by the cutesy title--this is not a mushy "I love my pet" sort of book. The author is a field biologist, with a lifetime of professional experience observing animal behavior. Her insights into the personality and behavior of her parrot are truly fascinating. I personally have never had a bird as a pet, but Burger's observations give insight into the depth of relationships possible with other species. This is truly a fascinating book, highly recommended.

If you love birds of any kind, especially parrots you will absolutely love this book. The story of Tiko the parrot and the author is at times funny, sad, heartwarming and it is always educational. This is a real page turner. Also, by reading this book it forced me to take a look at my relationships with others, with myself, and with my parrakeets.

There are a lot of errors at the beginning of the book about a Amazon parrots anatomy....she corrects them later in her book, Parrots are lovable, funny companions and even if you don't own one you can still enjoy the story.

I absolutely adore birds and have owned parakeets, lovebirds and now an adorable blue crown conure. I could relate so much of Tiko's behavior to my precious blue crown, CoCo. Parrots are truly the most treasured of all pets (in my humble opinion!) Much thanks to the author for sharing her knowledge, experience and love for birds.
