Daniel Bereal Period 4 Resilience By: Alonzo Mourning Resilience by Alonzo Mourning is a very good book. It is an inspiring book that makes you want to achieve your personal goals. Alonzo expresses his seriousness in this book. He expresses the hardships he went through during his childhood and how he had to mature at a very young age. He went through a lot at a young age. He had to go through the divorce of his mother and father. Alonzo had a tough decision regarding who he wanted to live with, but he chose his foster care mother Mrs. Threet, who was a mother like figure in his life. The setting of the story is in Miami where Alonzo played his NBA career for the majority of his life. Life in Miami is fun and there are a lot of parties. Visiting teams used to go out the night before games and party. Alonzo had fun in Miami since it was never extremely cold and the weather was always nice. Alonzo Mourning won a NBA championship while playing in Miami. The suspense in this book is great. It makes the reader inspired and makes the reader want to keep reading. When Alonzo was in his NBA career he had many arguments with his teammates and fights and it is very intense and fun to read. Especially when he played in the playoffs against the Knicks and he and his teammates would get into fights with the New York Knicks players, or when Alonzo got in a fight with Larry Johnson his old teammate who he had arguments with in the past over a salary contract. In college, Alonzo had a great deal of suspense also. He used to hangout with a friend that sold drugs and Alonzo had to go to court because of him that almost ended his college basketball career. This book also has its moments where you just want to sit and cry for Alonzo. Alonzo needed a kidney transplant and at the time he found out he thought he would never be able to play the game of basketball again. He had a fatal and rare kidney disease. Alonzo’s cholesterol was extremely high; some doctors could not believe he was living. In 2003, his cousin gave Alonzo one of his kidneys and Alonzo dedicated his life to others. After being out of basketball shape for three years, he finally came back to form in 2006. He helped Miami win its first championship and he won it against the Dallas Mavericks. It was Alonzo’s first championship. Overall, this is a very good book. It makes the reader want to go out and work hard and live a spectacular life. It goes from his passion about his youth and going to college at Georgetown. It goes to the difficult transitions over money and the tough playoff battles with the New York Knicks. The kidney disease and how much work he needed to do to get back on the basketball court. And finally, the championship season he had in Miami with the Heat.

This is a very touching story. I love reading a person's personal story. It really gives you insight into their creation. Alonzo has developed into a wonderful man. I have not always agreed with how he handled his basketball career, but I surely appreciate his passion for the game. He really goes into detail about his unique upbringing. I like the fact that he was very respectful to his parents regarding speaking about their story. He really wanted to focus on his personal decisions. You will find this book inspiring and touching. It is a light read. It also is a wonderful love story between Alonzo and his wife. His fight thru his health issues is an inspiration for most.
