While their is enough blame to go around concerning the present plight of black people, bell hooks offers insight to the black community that makes them take a look at the role they have played in nurturing an atmosphere of inadequecy within its ranks. From allowing black kids to be taught by those still rooted in white supremicist thinking to fundamentalist christianity promoting the power of human will over the possiblity of outside intervention to assist in the healing process, hooks pulls no punches in exposing the African American's misguided pursuit of equal status in America. Whether black or white, if you hate the truth, leave this book on the shelf.

Hooks touches upon many common practices that we as black people partake in but she shows the harsh effects that we can have on our own people. The book shines a light on many of the issues that we as black people need to face. by reading this book you are taking a step in the right direction.
