My first introduction to Swedish authors was through Stieg Larsson's Trilogy Series. Hungry for more Swedish mystery/crime novels, I discovered Henning Mankell's Wallander Series. Since the introduction to this first in the Martin Beck novels was written so compellingly by Mankell, I decided to read ROSEANNA. I must say that it is a gripping read that is difficult to put down. It also provides insight to both the lives of those on the police force and the procedurals they must contend with.

To me I picked up this book because one it was a series and two was a mystery with a good idea. So I gave it a read and overall I did enjoy the read, but at the same time felt like it didn't give me what other mystery novels i read gave. First off the main character never really felt he was distinguishing himself from the other cast of characters. You typically have a lead act that has a great intelligence like it Sherlock Holmes or just other things that makes the lead character standout. Next off it felt like at times it jumped around so quickly. You get to one point and instead of some transition details it just jumps to another point consistently. Finally the overall detective work was somewhat boring. Yes I understand that this is typical detective work and I actually enjoyed it, but for other readers you really never got that building moment or those series of events that had you jumping for the next sentence. Overall it is a good mystery novel. To me though it would be hard to say I recommend mystery lovers to read this since it never really made me want to read the second book.

The clarity of the writing and translation held me in thrall. In Henning Mankell's introduction to the reprint out in late 2008, he mentions that his husband and wife team inspired the new breed of police procedurals by the greats we read now. The view of the cop as a flawed individual with physical and personal issues was a new concept when they began. The slow, solid build-up of tension in Roseanna was so subtle that the denouement, when it came, had me actually gasping for breath. A resounding five stars for this series, for by now I have read several. Get them all. This is classic.

This is first of 10 books set in 60's and 70's following same group of homicide detectives. Social commentary as well as murders to be solved. Read all 10 in order.

I have read Stig Larsson, Henning Mankell, Karin Fossum and others. I love the Scandanavian authors and the translations have been excellent. Not this. AM and PM were mixed up, phrases seemed out of context and some were translated far too literally. I ordered several Martin beck books, I hope the others have better translators.

Both of the versions available on B&N appear to be in Spanish, or at least when I go to buy, they are. This one has the sample in English, and the overview in Spanish, so I am afraid to buy. This happened to me before with a translation of a different book, and I was treated very badly by B&N when I tried to fix the problem. BE CAREFUL BEFORE YOU BUY THIS!
