After the cold war we need more and more writing that helps us to understand Russians on a human level. This three-in-one volume gives us clasic insights into the Russian family, village life, and traditional culture, with a dose of analysis of life under the Communist State. It was a continually fascinating read. Anyone dealing with the Former Soviet Union needs to have this on their bookshelf. I don't know how Mead and company managed to do this!

NOW I understand Vladimir Putin! This is a fascinating 'three for one' volume combining the classic works of John Rickman, Geoffrey Gorer and Margaret Mead. This reissue still packs a lot of power and 'rings true' for those who know Russia. It should be on the bookshelf of anyone dealing with studies of the former Soviet Union, because it reveals so much.
